Bio

Heidi Chaya is a freelance writer and editor. She creates content for food, hospitality, and retail industry clients and has a background in academic and creative writing.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgian Court University and plans to complete her graduate studies in professional writing and editing. She also researches topics in food systems, gastronomy, nature writing, and ecocriticism for independent study.

Heidi’s work has been published in academic magazines, on clients’ websites, and in a poetry anthology. Her essays have appeared in literary journals, presented at academic conferences, and been used as instructional aids. She was awarded the Gail Judge Class of 1957 Memorial Award and First Award in English for her accomplishments in 2018.

During her academic career, Heidi served as a contributing writer, copyeditor, and editor in chief of the university newspaper. She also interned as a research assistant for a literature anthology, and she was recognized for her exceptional work as an academic writing tutor.

In her spare time, Heidi can usually be found cooking, birdwatching, playing guitar, or working on her personal writing projects. A native of New Jersey, she has traveled across the country and lived in both Canada and Australia. She most recently resided in Vermont before settling in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia.

The Scholar and the Savage blog was created in 2018 to reconcile her love of food with her passion for the written word. In an online landscape flooded with “food porn” and recipe blogs, Heidi seeks to offer something both literary and gastronomic – true food for thought.
